Kuranda and Beyond

The village of Kuranda is located in the rainforest 330 metres above sea level in the Cairns Highlands.

The climate is cooler and less humid and just 30 km from Cairns up the scenic Kuranda Range Road with views overlooking the Great Barrier Reef.

Kuranda was founded in 1876 and inhabited by the Djabugay aboriginal people. Tourism began in the area at the beginning of the twentieth century and became very popular in the 1960's with the "hippie" generation for it offered a fabulous location for their alternative lifestyle.

Kuranda is surrounded by World Heritage listed wet tropics rainforest with approximately 1,200 species of flowering plants, 800 of which are rainforest trees.

Here is a list of some of the things you can do while staying in Kuranda:-

Enjoy The Barron Falls and treetop boardwalk, as well as bushwalks within the rainforest around the village.

Travel on the Kuranda Scenic Railway in the afternoon to Freshwater and then return to your accommodation in Kuranda on the world famous Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

Thank you for providing such a wonderful place to stay. It was lovely to cook breakfast in our own kitchen and have so much space after four days at Cape Tribulation. We enjoyed the Kuranda Veranda Restaurant last night for dinner and recommend it to fellow travellers for the food, service and atmosphere. We wish we had another week of holidays to see all that Kuranda has to offer, but hope to come again some time.
