Reviews of Cairns

Karina - April 1999
Most travelers come to Australia and travel up the coast from Sydney to Cairns and I recommend it all the way. You will never see anything like the Great Barrier Reef.

A truly beautiful destination for all travellers and such a cheap escape from most spots in Australia

Cairns is the first stop if you want to go the the great barrier reef. It is a great touris destination and very popular through out the year.

Lived in Cairns for 6 years, and except the heat and humidity I loved it. The Esplanade has had a major overhaul and is a brilliant place for tourists and backpackers, including the free extra large public pool. Great day tours depart from Cairns every day to the outter reef and islands. Inland tours are well worht doing and there is just as much inland as there is off the coast. A must see destination.

Relaxing city on the water with the re-vamped esplanade making it even more pleasant. Plenty of restaurants and accommodation to suit all budgets. Also handy city for island hopping.

Had a fantastic time. Loved the steam railway. Green Island was great.

Absolutely wonderful. The Kuranda railway, the Barrier Reef, the gorge and Port Douglas are a must to see. We stayed there for five glorious days. We left wishing we had stayed there longer.

Cairns is a very hot/humid place, but very tropical. A fantastic tourist destination. Was only here for two days but would have liked to stay longer. The rainforest is beautiful and shopping was an experience.

Loved it although I had time to spend and get to know the locals. It is the hub for trips to the reef which are well run, trips to the daintree and cape tribulation. Some other interesting not so popular touristy things to do is go horse riding some great views and a little different.

Cairns is great tourist destination with much to do. With Great Barrier Reef, beautiful beaches, Night Markets it\'s a very exciting place with lots of different cultures to experience.

Cairns is a great base of operations for both the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef and has some stunning five star properties overlooking the marina.

I have been to Cairns in October and in February. Definitely go in October rather than the wet season! In february it rained for the whole 3 days I was there. In October, the weather was perfect. Cairns itself was pretty average. The beach there is horrendous, and it\'s pretty tacky as a town. However, as a launching pad to explore the barrier reef, the daintree forest etc, it\'s great! Plenty to see and do although you\'re probably better off staying in Port Douglas or Palm Cove as a base.

sandy - September 2006
What a great tourist city. Its tropical, geared for tourists, young and old alike. UNIQUE!! Nowhere else can you go to the great barrier reef,a beautiful city,a lush rainforest, the skyrail, the beach, the restaurants in one spot. What more can I say. The hotels and service are of world standard.

A big hot town. Plenty of accomodation options & a great base from which you can enjoy all the tropical North has to offer. Must sees are the barrier Reef, The Hinterlands & the beautiful drive from Cairns to Port Douglas.

Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the tip of Australia(Cape Tribulation). Tropical paradise but make sure you avoid the wet season. Best suggestion is to charter a yacht for a few days!

a very hot city - you must go out to the great barrier reef if you stay there. There is a great swimming pool on the foreshore - the beaches arent really beaches !

Definitely visit the butterfly sanctuary and take the train to Kuranda. This is an enjoyable journey in itself. Visit the rainforest where you can take a trip in an army duck vehicle. Excellent

Cairns is a vibrant modern city with a lot to offer - a World Heritage Rainforest, close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, a wonderful marina and more than enough activities and leisure pursuits to satisfy even the most demanding visitor.

A great spot for sightseeing and basing yourself to get around the North. If city life isn\'t your thing, stay on one of the Cairns Beaches. This place has everything you need and more. Can be a bit noisy on a Saturday night!

Cairns is a great place to base yourself whether it\'s visiting the reef, rainforest or Kuranda. The scenic skyway is a must!

Take a boat ride out to the reefs for your free snorkel, and trial scuba dive.

It\'s the gateway to the most beautiful lush rainforest that Australia has, thoroughly enjoyed doing the boat trip out to Green Island.

The best night life in Australia... The party is non stop over there. It is very green and colourful town. Great spot to explore the Great Barrier Reef.

TRUDIE - July 2002
Cairns is a tropical city, with humid weather and cyclones during the months of October to March (approx). The rest of the year Cairns has temperate weather. The great barrier reef is off the coast of Cairns. You can go snorkelling with Turtles. Boats, sun, beaches and a mixture of travellers and diverse native people complete the picture of Cairns.

Mat - August 2006
Very nice area with about an 1 hour drive to Port Douglas, very good nightlife and lots to see, I have not made it to Barrier Reef in 2 times I have been to Cairns so can\'t comment on that.

Great Barrier Reef is a must see destination. The water is Chrystal clear and you can see a lot of fish and the reefs.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Heather - September 2004
So much more fun than you would think in a beach town without a beach. The man made lagoon area in the centre of town is exellent and where everyone hangs out. A great night market and of course Cairns is the gateway to everything Barrier Reef. Hundreds of snorkel and dive operators operating here, just make sure you get up early enough to go on one, the bars are ridiculous here

James - November 2005
Cairns in November is hot and becomming humid. I was there for a few days for work, and stayed in town, one block from the main shopping strip. I found a great juice and smoothie place in one of the malls, so go exploring. The waterfront is okay, but I prefer Port Douglas for a holiday, as it has real Beaches and more of a relaxed and party atmosphere.
